Guillermo del Toro’s ‘Cronos’ – New 4K Restoration Gets Theatrical Release [Trailer]
The latest by visionary filmmaker Guillermo del Toro, Frankenstein, is officially a Golden Globe nominee, but his audacious feature debut is also sharing the spotlight with a 4K restoration that’s heading to limited theaters soon.
Janus Films’ restoration opens in theaters at New York’s IFC Center on Wednesday, December 31.
That’s a fitting release date considering the role New Year’s Eve plays in del Toro’s vampiric debut.
In Cronos, “Kindly antiques dealer Jesús Gris (Federico Luppi) happens upon an ancient golden device in the shape of a scarab, and soon finds himself the possessor and victim of its sinister, addictive powers, as well as the target of a mysterious American named Angel (a delightfully crude and deranged Ron Perlman).”
Claudio Brook, Margarita Isabel, and Tamara Shanath also star.
The first feature-length film written and directed by del Toro, released in 1993, was selected as the Mexican entry for Best Foreign Language Film at the 66th Academy Awards. Its exploration of unique vampire mythology by way of alchemy, a long-time interest of del Toro’s, encompassed what would become del Toro’s trademark in film: using genre elements to navigate the dual nature of humanity and its emotional relationships.

Ryan Gosling (Project Hail Mary) has made no secret of the fact that he’d love to play Ghost Rider in a Marvel Cinematic Universe movie, and it’s now officially happening.
Announced by Marvel out of San Diego Comic-Con tonight, Ryan Gosling will play the iconic Marvel character in a Ghost Rider movie being directed by Shawn Levy!
Expect Ryan Gosling to play Ghost Rider on the big screen in 2028.
Johnny Blaze is of course the most iconic and well-known Ghost Rider, selling his soul to Satan and becoming a supernatural badass. Nicolas Cage brought Blaze to life on screen in both 2007’s Ghost Rider and 2011’s Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, while Gabriel Luna more recently played the Robbie Reyes version of Ghost Rider in the series “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.”
Luna was set to star in his own Ghost Rider spinoff series in the wake of that small screen appearance, but that Hulu project ended up being squashed before it ever had a chance.
Fans have been waiting for Ghost Rider to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe for many years now, with Ryan Gosling making it clear that he’d love to bring the character back to life.
