Director Tomas Alfredson (Let the Right One In, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy) is now in production on Seance on a Wet Afternoon, a new adaptation of Mark McShane’s 1961 novel.
Rachel Weisz (The Mummy), Matthew Macfadyen (“Succession”), and Joe Alwyn (The Favourite) will star.
Shooting in the UK, the dramatic crime thriller is written by Emmy-winning “Adolescence” co-creator Jack Thorne.
It follows Myra, a self-proclaimed medium who convinces her husband Billy to kidnap the son of a wealthy family so she can lead the police to the ‘missing’ child and legitimize her psychic abilities. When Myra’s true intentions come to light, however, Billy realizes her plan threatens to consume them both.
The crew includes cinematographer Marcell Rév (“Euphoria”), production designer Jacqueline Abrahams (The Lobster), costume designer Sarah Blenkinsop (The Lobster), hair and make-up designer Daniel Phillips (No Time to Die), and casting director Jina Jay (“Black Mirror”).
The film is produced by Weisz & Polly Stokes for Astral Projection, Ed Guiney & Andrew Lowe for Element Pictures, and Robyn Slovo. Executive producers include Thorne, Macfadyen, Farhana Bhul, and David Kimbangi. Film4 and Fremantle financed.
FilmNation Entertainment is handling international sales, with UTA Independent Film Group and CAA Media Finance handling domestic rights.
Bryan Forbes previously helmed a 1964 adaptation of Seance on a Wet Afternoon starring Kim Stanley and Richard Attenborough. It also spawned the Japanese horror film Seance in 2000 and an opera in 2009.
