HUNTR/X will officially return in KPop Demon Hunters 2.
Netflix has given a green light to the KPop Demon Hunters sequel, which comes as little surprise given the record-breaking success of the first film.
Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans will return to direct and write the followup, kicking off the duo’s exclusive multi-year deal with Netflix across animation. Sony Pictures Animation will once again produce.
“I feel immense pride as a Korean filmmaker that the audience wants more from this Korean story and our Korean characters,” commented Kang.“There’s so much more to this world we have built and I’m excited to show you. This is only the beginning.”
“These characters are like family to us, their world has become our second home,” added Appelhans. “We’re excited to write their next chapter, challenge them and watch them evolve — and continue pushing the boundaries of how music, animation and story can come together.”
“With KPop Demon Hunters, Maggie and Chris didn’t just reach audiences, they ignited a global fandom that crossed languages, generations, and genres,” said Netflix chief content officer Bela Bajaria. “We’re incredibly proud to deepen our partnership with them and, together with our partners at Sony Pictures Animation, build this universe in ways that will surprise and delight fans all over the world.”
“Maggie and Chris were brave enough to take a bold creative swing by telling a story that was both deeply personal and broke cultural barriers,” said Netflix Film chairman Dan Lin. “At Netflix, our goal is to make someone’s favorite movie, and they did that by making the most popular Netflix movie of all time! There’s so much more story to tell, and we can’t wait to bring more HUNTR/X to fans everywhere.”
“Maggie and Chris brought their incredibly distinct perspectives to this film, telling a story audiences embraced around the globe,” added Sony Pictures Animation presidents Kristine Belson and Damien de Froberville. “We are thrilled to work with them to expand their vision in the next chapter.”
Danya Jimenez and Hannah McMechan, who share screenwriting credit with Kang and Appelhans on the original, are not mentioned in the press release.
In KPop Demon Hunters, Korean pop superstars Rumi, Mira, and Zoey use their secret identities as demon hunters to protect their fans from ever-present supernatural danger. Together, they must face their biggest threat — an irresistible rival boy band of demons in disguise.
The animated fantasy musical premiered on Netflix in June 2025 and went on to become the streamer’s all-time most-watched original title with over 325 million views. It’s nominated for two Academy Awards: Animated Feature Film and Original Song (“Golden”).
The sequel is expected to be released in 2029, with numerous other KPop Demon Hunters projects in the works.
