The release schedule continues to remain densely packed for horror. Spring brings an exciting slate of anticipated releases, and May, in particular, aims to keep us busy at the box office and beyond. So much so that it’s becoming easier and easier for new horror releases to slip through the cracks.

This week’s streaming picks highlight a handful of 2025 releases that you might’ve missed, but are worth seeking out.

Animale – Kanopy

French filmmaker Emma Benestan quietly contributed to the recent body horror renaissance with a searing slowburn centered around professional bull runner Nejma Chokri (Oulaya Amamra), who seemingly begins to undergo a strange metamorphosis after a harrowing encounter. Soon, Nejma’s male counterparts begin dying, one by one. The violent nature of bullfighting is put on graphic display, a brutal metaphor for Najma’s horrific plight. It’s a disturbing French horror with an emotionally devastating purpose.

Beast of War – AMC+, Shudder

Kiah Roache-Turner’s 1942 Australian war movie draws inspiration from the true account of the HMAS Armidale, which shipwrecked soldiers at sea with one ravenous shark. Cinematographer Mark Wareham infuses Beast of War with a rich visual language that not only elevates the production value but also lends a rich Gothic style, enhanced by bold hues and dense fog. It’s the behemoth animatronic shark that steals this atmospheric horror movie, though.

The Damned – Disney+, Hulu

When a strange foreign ship sinks just off the coast, it forces the village to make an impossible choice, with widow Eva (Odessa Young, Assassination Nation) the ultimate decider on whether to save the boat’s crew or survive the brutal season. The villagers are wracked with guilt over their choice, but when strange fates begin to befall them, they wonder if the folkloric Draugr has come to haunt them in Thordur Palsson’s 19th-century supernatural chiller. It’s a cautionary, folkloric tale of terror.

In Our Blood – Kanopy

In Our Blood

Filmmaker Emily Wyland (Brittany O’Grady, Monitor) decides to make a documentary about her estranged mother, Sam (Alanna Ubach), when reuniting after ten years apart due to addiction. When Sam goes missing, Emily’s search uncovers hostile locals and a sinister truth tied to her mother’s past. Oscar-nominated documentarian Pedro Kos (Rebel Hearts, Lead Me Home) approaches his narrative feature debut, a meditative slow burn that builds to a thrilling, supernatural update on the found footage format.

Meat Kills – Midnight Pulp, Screambox

Those missing the mean-spirited slashers of the early aughts will find a lot of gore to love in Meat Kills, the first Dutch horror movie to earn the NC-17 rating. The nihilistic horror movie follows an animal rights activist who targets a pig farm, only to find its sadistic owner wants revenge. Except this provocative slasher to unleash buckets of blood. Paul de Vrijer wrote Meat Kills, directed by Martijn Smits.

Horror journalist, RT Top Critic, and Critics Choice Association member. Has appeared on PBS series' Monstrum, served on the SXSW Midnighter shorts jury, and moderated horror panels for WonderCon, SeriesFest, and Popcorn Frights Film Fest.

“Mythic Quest” actor Chase Yi has been cast in a lead role in Paramount and Blumhouse’s new Paranormal Activity movie, Deadline reports this afternoon.

Ian Tuason (Undertone) will direct the eighth installment in the Paranormal Activity film franchise, set to release in theaters May 21, 2027.

As for character details or plot, well, those remain scarce at this stage.

While we wait for further news on whether the demonic Toby will reappear, Tuason previously revealed to Bloody Disgusting that technology will play a huge role in his vision: “Technology — camera technology — has advanced to a point where it’s become a big part of the film and what I want to do there.”

It’s fitting, especially as it was the original Paranormal Activity that inspired the filmmaker’s haunting debut, undertone.

Paranormal Activity, created by Oren Peli, first hit theaters in 2007. Its groundbreaking minimalist approach to found-footage ghost stories has spawned a seven-film franchise that’s grossed nearly $900 million worldwide.

Franchise originator Oren Peli will produce for Solana Films, with James Wan and Jason Blum producing for Blumhouse Atomic Monster. Michael Clear and Judson Scott will exec produce for Blumhouse Atomic, with Alayna Glasthal overseeing the project for the company. Other exec producers include Steven Schneider for Room 101, Inc., Dan Slater and Cody Calahan.

Also on the way soon is the Paranormal Activity stage play.
