Gemma Chua-Tran (“Heartbreak High”) is the latest addition to the cast of Netflix‘s live-action Gundam movie, Deadline reports.
She joins the previously announced Sydney Sweeney (The Housemaid), Noah Centineo (Black Adam), Shioli Kutsuna (Deadpool 2), and Michael Mando (Spider-Man: Homecoming).
Based on Yoshiyuki Tomino‘s revered Japanese anime franchise, the film is being written and directed by Jim Mickle (“Sweet Tooth,” Stake Land).
In the works since 2021, Legendary co-developed the project with franchise owner Bandai Namco Filmworks.
Mickle and Linda Moran will produce under their Nightshade banner along with Centineo and his Arkhum Productions partner Enzo Marc.
Plot details are under wraps. Gundam is known pioneering the “real robot” mecha genre, depicting giant robots — governed by realistic physics and technological limitations — within a militaristic setting.
Gundam is set in the Universal Century, a future where humanity has colonized space. When a rebellion erupts between Earth and its colonies, the ensuing conflict is fought by pilots in massive mechanized contraptions known as mobile suits.
The long-running multimedia franchise launched with “Mobile Suit Gundam” in 1979. It now spans 83 animated series and movies, in addition to a lucrative merchandising arm that generates $600 million annually.
