Apple Studios has greenlighted sci-fi action thriller Liminal, based on the AWA graphic novel Telepaths by Eisner Award-winner J. Michael Straczynski, Steve Epting, and Brian Reber, per Deadline.
Fast X director Louis Leterrier will helm the thriller, with Academy Award nominee Vanessa Kirby (The Fantastic Four: First Steps) and Emmy winner Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Candyman) set to star.
The source material is set “in a world where a tenth of the population suddenly gains telepathic powers as a result of electromagnetic disturbance. Subsequently, newly-telepathic Boston police find themselves contending with a faction, led by a wrongly convicted prisoner, who are trying to escape a world in which their powers will make them targets.”
Plot details for the adaptation remain under wraps at this time.
Justin Rhodes (Terminator: Dark Fate) pens the screenplay.
Telepaths launched as a six-issue comic series in 2021 before its release in graphic novel form. J. Michael Straczynski is a heavy hitter in the comic space, the creator behind series like “Babylon 5,” and screenwriter for films including World War Z.
“I’ve always been fascinated by questions of privacy and what defines the self,” Straczynski explained to SyFy on Telepaths origins. “And the fact that so often we are defined by our secrets, by the things that we don’t tell anyone, and what happens when suddenly all of that is out in the open, and there’s nowhere to hide. That to me is the most interesting part. And I started thinking about this for a long, long time. I thought I have more things to say about this. I want to get it out in another story.”
