Brady Corbet will follow up his Academy Award-winning The Brutalist with an as-yet-untitled movie about America’s history with the occult.
“My new film is a film that is sort of about American mysticism and the history of the occult in America,” Corbet told Dublin’s Storyhouse screenwriting festival yesterday, as reported by Deadline.
“I’ve been reading tons and tons of material about the migration of the cultist belief systems and structures,” he added. “I’ve started working with this fascinating guy called Mitch Horowitz, who is an occultist historian of America.”
You may known Horowitz from his appearances in the likes of V/H/S/Beyond, History Channel’s “Ancient Aliens,” Shudder’s “Cursed Films,” Discovery’s “Alien Encounters: Fact or Fiction,” and the folk horror doc Woodlands Dark and Days Bewitched.
Corbet said he’s “so happy” to have a 50-day shoot for the new film, but the script is 200 pages. For comparison, The Brutalist‘s 165-page screenplay was shot in 33 days, and the film clocked in at 215 minutes.
“I would let people do whatever they wanted for a few takes but I’ve never really had time for it. But I’m not against it,” he noted. “I’m very focused when I’m under those conditions. You have to be. And frankly, they don’t want to work with someone who wouldn’t be.”
Although it’s unclear how much the project will lean into horror, it’s always nice to see a lauded filmmaker explore the genre. Stay tuned for more on this one as it develops.
