Having tackled Evil Dead and The Mummy, the next horror property writer-director Lee Cronin would like to put his stamp on is A Nightmare on Elm Street.
“I would find it very hard not to have a swing at ol’ Freddy Krueger, because he haunted my nightmares throughout my entire childhood and still pops up about four times a year,” Cronin tells Variety.
The filmmaker also cites The Lord of the Rings as a dream project. “That’s a world that I absolutely adore. I’d drop everything for an opportunity to play around in Middle-earth.”
He adds, “I actually think it’s unlikely that my next movie will be franchise adjacent — and that’s something that feels important to me right now.”
Cronin’s next feature is likely to be Box of Bones, a supernatural horror movie about a love triangle between two people and a ghost. He’s also developing the Irish folk horror series “Spiral” with Blumhouse and Atomic Monster.
As of this month, it’s been 16 years since Freddy Krueger last graced the big screen, in large part due to rights issues. Do you think Cronin would be a good choice to resurrect the slasher icon?
