Lin Shaye has faced all manner of evil as medium Elise Rainier in the Insidious series, but none quite like the one in Insidious: Out of the Further.
Sam Spruell (“A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms”) plays the malevolent entity known as Cyrus in the franchise’s upcoming sixth installment.
“[He] was truly scary,” Shaye recalls to EW. “When I met him on the street, I had a visceral response, which was crazy. So it’s a whole new catalog of people and even of ideas.”
Cyrus stands out from previous Insidious demons because “he’s funny,” which can be “very disarming,” Shaye describes.
“There’s a grandness to him. It’s sort of like Dracula,” she continues. “There’s this enfolding and this bigness. I did say to [Spruell] it feels like Shakespeare. It feels very otherworldly, bigger than life, but very rooted in reality. I think that’s a perfect combination for an antagonist who is gonna be really awful.”
Insidious: Out of the Further opens in theaters August 21 via Sony and Blumhouse-Atomic Monster.
Amelia Eve (“The Haunting of Bly Manor”) stars as Gemma, a young mother raising her daughter in the house she grew up in who discovers she can travel into The Further, the purgatorial realm of lost souls at the heart of the Insidious universe.
When something evil comes after her, Gemma discovers an ability that changes everything: she doesn’t just enter The Further, she can bring what lives there back to the real world. Once the demons realize her power, our world becomes their playground.
The cast also includes Brandon Perea (Nope), Island Austin, and Maisie Richardson-Sellers (“Legends of Tomorrow”).
Jacob Chase (Come Play) writes and directs, sharing story credit with David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick (The Conjuring: Last Rites, Orphan).
Jason Blum, Oren Peli, James Wan, and Leigh Whannell produce, with Johnson-McGoldrick, Ryan Turek, Steven Schneider, and Brian Kavanaugh-Jones as executive producers.
Wan launched Insidious in 2011, followed by 2013’s Insidious: Chapter 2, 2015’s Insidious: Chapter 3, 2018’s Insidious: The Last Key, and 2023’s Insidious: The Red Door. In total, the series has earned over $740 million at the global box office.
