I’ve always considered Drag Me to Hell to be a semi-official spin-off of the Evil Dead franchise (it even has a Deadite possession scene!), so it’s great to see the marketing team for Evil Dead Burn pay homage to one of Sam Raimi’s most underrated genre flicks via the new film’s brand-new poster art.
As you can see when comparing the image to the original Drag Me to Hell one-sheet below, both posters depict the heroine of their respective movies screaming as they’re clawed at by demonic hands emerging from a raging inferno, though there might be something more to the visual similarity than a mere tongue-in-cheek homage to a previous Raimi film.
Today’s eagerly-anticipated trailer drop revealed that the plot of the new film involves the Necronomicon releasing Hell on earth (as evidenced by Hunter Doohan’s eerie explanation that “my grandfather believed the Devil would return if anyone read from The Book of the Dead”), so the not-so-subtle nod to the hellish thrills of the fan-favorite 2009 horror-comedy might just be a clue about how Burn intends to drag hell to us.
We’ll just have to wait and see when Evil Dead Burn releases in theaters July 10.
“Misery loves company,” Drag Me to Hell star Alison Lohman commented in reference to us pointing out the Evil Dead Burn poster comparison over on Twitter this afternoon!
