It’s hard to believe that Aliens is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, as it still stands as one of the best sequels of all time.
Writer-director James Cameron is now considering converting the 1986 sci-fi/action/horror hybrid to 3D, as he previously did with Titanic and Terminator 2.
“Aliens is a creature of its time,” Cameron tells Letterboxd. “We are thinking about converting Aliens [to 3D], because I know now that the tools are so much better than they were for creating depth maps. We’re probably going to wind up converting Aliens, which will be a fun experience.”
He adds, “That film seems to be evergreen. People still go back to it a lot. If people remember a movie that I did 38 years ago, I think I’ve already won.”
In Aliens, Ellen Ripley, the sole survivor of a deadly alien encounter, is recruited to rescue a space colony on the planet where the first xenomorph reigned. Only one small girl has survived — but a whole nest of “them” is waiting for new prey.

Both the theatrical and director’s cuts of Aliens are currently streaming on HBO Max alongside the rest of the Alien franchise.
