‘Pan’s Labyrinth,’ Ken Russell’s ‘The Devils’ Restorations to Screen at Cannes

Two decades after earning a record-setting 22-minute standing ovation, Pan’s Labyrinth is returning to Cannes, per THR.

The 2006 dark fantasy film kicks off the 2026 Cannes Classic lineup with a pre-opening screening on May 12 with writer-director Guillermo del Toro in attendance.

Del Toro personally supervised every stage of the meticulous 4K restoration from the original 35mm negative.

Set in 1944 Francoist Spain, Pan’s Labyrinth follows an imaginative young girl who meets a faun that tells her she’s a princess and she must prove her worthiness by completing three dangerous tasks.

Ivana Baquero, Sergi López, Maribel Verdú, Doug Jones, Ariadna Gil, and Álex Angulo star.

While Cannes audiences will be the first to see the new Pan’s Labyrinth restoration, it will open in US theaters — including premium large formats and 3D — on October 9 via Cineverse.

Also representing the genre in Cannes Classics will be The Devils, writer-director Ken Russell‘s controversial horror movie starring Vanessa Redgrave and Oliver Reed.

The 1971 film has been newly restored in 4K from the original camera negative by Warner Bros. Russell’s wife Elize Tribble Russell and film critic Mark Kermode will be in attendance.

Set in 17th-century France, The Devils sees Father Urbain Grandier’s protection of the city of Loudun from the corrupt Cardinal Richelieu undermined by a sexually repressed nun’s accusation of witchcraft.
