Fantastic Four: First Steps director Matt Shakman and writer Josh Friedman will reunite for a new, as-yet-untitled Planet of the Apes film, Deadline reports.
Sources tell Deadline it will not be a continuation of 2024’s Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes — which Friedman also wrote — but an original story set in a world where apes reign supreme.
Shakman will produce alongside longtime Apes producers Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver.
One of 20th Century Studios’ most enduring franchises, Planet of the Apes has amassed more than $1.7 billion at the worldwide box office since its launch in 1968.
Based on the French sci-fi novel by Pierre Boulle, the original Planet of the Apes was followed by four sequels between 1970 and 1973 along with a TV series and an animated series.
Tim Burton remade Planet of the Apes in 2001 before the franchise was rebooted with 2011’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes, followed by 2014’s Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and 2017’s War for the Planet of the Apes.
Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, directed by Wes Ball, grossed $397 million at the global box office.
