The closing moments of Mortal Kombat II tease where the franchise could go next, something that its screenwriter is already plotting out now.
Speaking with THR, writer Jeremy Slater (“The Exorcist”, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire) revealed that he’s been commissioned to write the script for the third installment, which hasn’t officially been greenlit yet.
Considering that MKII just received the highest opening of any Mortal Kombat feature, it feels safe to say that odds are high that a greenlight is inevitable. But that’s not even the most exciting reveal in Slater’s conversation with THR.
Once he completes his latest draft of Mortal Kombat III, Slater will next turn his attention to his upcoming feature directorial debut, Summoner.
“I wrote a movie called Summoner that just got the green light. It’s at one of the majors, and they might want to make announcements. But it’s bounced around for a while, and I’ve found the perfect home for it with creative partners that I’m really, really excited about,” Slater tells THR. “So we’re casting at the moment, and I’m hoping to shoot it in August. It’s the scariest thing I’ve ever written, and it’s a very, very fun horror movie.”
Details beyond this remain under wraps, of course, but Slater making his directorial debut with an original horror movie immediately is exciting news.
The filmmaker was previously attached to make his directorial debut on a now unproduced Atomic Monster horror project titled Thread.
With production on Summoner set to begin later this summer, expect to hear more on the mysterious new horror project soon.
