Part of the reason why Kane Parson’s Backrooms YouTube series has become such an inspirational hit among horror fans is the fact that a single talented teenager managed to scrape together a liminal horror epic from customized Blender assets rendered on his own personal computer.
While A24’s upcoming Backrooms film appears to be a faithful add-on to Parsons’ story, the bigger budget has allowed the young director to try out a brand-new set of filmmaking tools.
In fact, the film appears to be focusing on practical effects in order to bring the “Complex” to life, with Kane reporting to THR that over 30,000 square feet of liminal sets were built by the studio according to his precise specifications – with crewmembers reportedly getting lost in the nightmarish expanse of lore-accurate carpeting and wallpaper.
However, the movie might very well have another practical surprise in store for genre fans in the shape of former basketball player and Alien: Romulus alumni Robert Bobroczkyi, who played the extraordinarily terrifying Offspring in director Fede Alvarez’s production.

Bobroczkyi was spotted on the official Backrooms’ IMDB page, and fans are speculating that he may very well be playing some version of the humanoid Lifeform that has stalked Parsons’ series as far back as that initial found footage video that started it all. Dedicated fans have also kept close tabs on his Instagram account, noting the director among his followers.
While A24 has yet to confirm the actor’s role in the film, Robert Bobroczkyi’s towering 7’7” presence alone is already a sure sign that we should be in for some memorable scares.
Of course, we’ll only be sure that he’s in fact playing the otherworldly Lifeform when the movie releases in theaters on May 29 from A24.
