Will Smith has signed on to star in Supermax, an action-thriller helmed by Halloween trilogy director David Gordon Green, Deadline reports.
Written by David Weil & David J. Rosen (“Hunters,” “Invasion”), the film follows two FBI agents investigating a murder perpetrated within the world’s most secure prison.
In a deal pegged in the $70 million range, Amazon MGM Studios has acquired the worldwide rights from Miramax, who won a bidding war for the high-concept spec script last year.
Deadline notes, “We understand this one will be a streaming play and not a theatrical release.”
Additional casting is underway, including for Smith’s female FBI agent partner. Production is set to begin mid-August.
The Picture Company (The Commuter, Gunpowder Milkshake) partners Andrew Rona & Alex Heineman are producing alongside Will Smith & Adam Fishbach (Smile) for Smith’s Westbrook.
Supermax will be the biggest budget movie of Green’s career to date.
