Young filmmaker Curry Barker is a busy man in the wake of his first theatrical feature Obsession, with paranormal movie Anything But Ghosts coming soon and the future of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise in his hands. That probably doesn’t leave him time for much else at the moment, but does Barker ever plan on expanding the world of Obsession?
At the center of Obsession is the mysterious One Wish Willow toy, which quite clearly works and makes anyone’s wildest wish come true. The film centers on a man who wishes the girl he loves will love him more than anyone else in the world, while we also see another character wish for a billion dollars. Both wishes almost instantly come true, in vastly different ways.
Curry Barker feels that if Obsession were to become a franchise, it would likely center on the One Wish Willow concept. And he’d love to turn it into an anthology television series.
Barker tells Total Film, “I obviously have a couple more things that I’m excited about next, but I do see Obsession 2, maybe. Or even, what really is exciting to me, is maybe an anthology. Like a one-hour episode… each episode is a different wish that goes completely off the rails.”
“Maybe I’ll direct the pilot with the same DP, and then you could invite other filmmakers to give their spin at it,” Curry Barker ponders aloud. “That would be really cool.”
Barker also admits in his chat with Total Film that the One Wish Willow existing in the film’s world doesn’t make all that much sense. After all, if this magical supernatural toy is available to anyone who wants one for a mere $6.99, wouldn’t the world be completely overrun by everyone’s wishes gone wrong? “It’s kind of a plot hole,” Barker admits to the outlet.
He continues, “The world is pretty normal from what we see. So it doesn’t really make sense. Here’s my take. Every time someone makes a wish, they enter into an alternate reality, where their wish comes true. So you’re not experiencing everybody’s wish at the same time. And that’s why… but then it doesn’t make sense, because the money falls from the ceiling.”
Barker jokes, “Yeah, it’s broken.”
In Curry Barker’s Obsession, after breaking the mysterious One Wish Willow to win his crush’s heart, a hopeless romantic finds himself getting exactly what he asked for but soon discovers that some desires come at a dark, sinister price.
Obsession is now playing in theaters nationwide.
