A new generation has arrived on the horror scene, and it’s being led by filmmakers like Curry Barker and Kane Parsons. In the direct wake of Curry Barker’s Obsession approaching $100 million at the box office, Kane Parsons’ debut feature Backrooms is now playing in theaters, and it’s already proving itself to be a massive hit for Parsons and distributor A24.
Backrooms debuted in theaters last night for Thursday night previews, and Deadline reports that the liminal horror nightmare scared up an incredible $10.4 million in a single night!
Deadline explains, “The previews here for Backrooms are ahead of Scream 7‘s $7.8M, as well as John Wick: Chapter 4 ($8.9M) and [higher than] Eternals ($9.5M) and Five Nights at Freddy’s ($10.3M); the latter another fervent fan-driven property. The opening range for those movies are between $63.6M and $80M, and many distribution sources are now giddy that this R-rated genre movie will easily blow past its most recent forecast of $40M-$45M.”
The production budget for Backrooms was a reported $10 million, so it’s already guaranteed to start turning a profit in its debut weekend. While initially projected to debut on the scene with somewhere in the ballpark of $20 million, that number was later adjusted into the $40 million range, but now it’s looking like the Backrooms opening weekend could be MUCH higher.
