Nikki’s Fate? Curry Barker’s ‘Anything But Ghosts’ Takes Place in the Same Universe as ‘Obsession’!

What’s next from Obsession filmmaker Curry Barker? Before he puts his stamp on the Chainsaw Massacre franchise, Barker will return with horror-comedy Anything But Ghosts.

Anything But Ghosts has already wrapped production, in fact, and the film will reunite Curry Barker with Blumhouse and Focus Features. And since Obsession and Anything But Ghosts are being released by the same companies, do they also exist in the same universe?!

Yes, actually, they do!

Curry Barker has revealed this week that the upcoming Anything But Ghosts features an Easter Egg reference/connection to the world of his hit horror movie Obsession.

Deadline notes in an article today that Curry Barker made the following statement during a Q&A session with the audience that took place after a screening of Obsession

“There’s like a news article thing on the next movie where you hear a news anchor talking about a triple homicide [by] a woman.”

Barker is of course referring to the events of Obsession, teasing that Anything But Ghosts will give us some idea of what happens to Nikki after the movie. She wasn’t in control of her own body at the time of murdering multiple people, of course, but you can imagine that Nikki isn’t going to have an easy time explaining that one. Now that she’s been freed from the One Wish Willow curse, it’s probably a given that Nikki is going to end up in prison for the rest of her life. But perhaps we’ll learn a little bit more about Nikki’s ultimate fate in Anything But Ghosts.

“Ultimately, it’s up to [Curry] where that goes, but he did drop a little Easter egg in his next film,” Obsession star Inde Navarrette teases in her own words. “In the background on the news, there’s a girl being charged with three counts of homicide, so that’s kind of the direction.”

What else do we know about Anything But Ghosts?

“It’s about these two con artist ghost hunters that just con old women and single dads, but they’re really good at it,” Curry Barker tells CBR. “They can make the table shake, they can make the lights flicker. They’ve got all this special equipment.” He continues, “They put on a show… until they run into a very real, very dangerous dark entity.”

Barker directs from a script he co-wrote with longtime creative partner Cooper Tomlinson (Milk & Serial). Both Barker and Tomlinson will also star as the film’s ghost hunters.

“It’s so different than Obsession, because the idea itself just lends itself better to comedy, because it’s literally about two ghost hunter con artists,” Barker told Bloody Disgusting.

“It’s Cooper and me doing our thing, so it lends itself better to comedy, but it’s still set in this super grounded world. It’s ghosts being real in a world where ghosts are not real,” he added.

Aaron Paul (“Breaking Bad”), Bryce Dallas Howard (Jurassic World), and Violet McGraw (M3GAN) also star in Anything But Ghosts. Stay tuned for more info as we learn it.
