The box office story for Kane Parsons’ Backrooms just keeps getting bigger and more impressive, with the film passing $100 million at the worldwide box office in its opening weekend alone. That opening was the highest opening weekend for any original horror movie, and Backrooms is on its way to becoming one of the biggest horror films of all time.
Deadline now reports this afternoon that Backrooms is currently passing the $100 million mark at the United States box office as it heads into its second weekend of release.
That makes Backrooms the highest grossing movie at the domestic box office in the entire history of A24. Most impressively, Deadline reminds, “Backrooms pulled this off in six days.”
The previous record holder for A24 was Marty Supreme starring Timothee Chalamet, which hit $96 million at the domestic box office late last year and into this year. The worldwide total for Marty Supreme is still higher than Backrooms at $191 million, but again, Backrooms is only at the very beginning of its run and will likely pass $200 million worldwide real soon.
Deadline notes in their report, “Backrooms’ second weekend [within the United States] is expected to be down anywhere from -55% to -60% with $32 million-$37 million.”
A huge part of the story here is that the production budget for Backrooms was a reported $10 million, the kind of budget that often doesn’t result in $200+ million movies. This one was a massive success literally from the first Thursday night of release, and everything from this point forward is just adding more and more profit onto the pile for Blumhouse and A24.
