Taylor Russell (Bones and All), Cameron Britton (“The Umbrella Academy”), Alicia Vikander (Ex Machina), and Michael Fassbender (Prometheus) all star in Hope, but they’ve all been noticeably absent from marketing materials so far.
A new set of South Korean character posters might finally reveal why.
The South Korean sci-fi thriller from writer-director Na Hong-jin (The Wailing) will release in theaters in the United States by NEON on September 9. It’s also headed to the Toronto International Film Festival next month, after making an impressive showing at the South Korean box office earlier this summer.
Set in the remote South Korean village of Hope Harbor, police chief Bum-seok and officer Sung-ae are called to find a mysterious creature that has wreaked havoc on the village.
In the nearby forest, a coterie of hunters, including Sung- ki, set out to track the beast and find themselves hunted instead. But all is not as it seems, and perceptions can be misleading.
What begins as ignorance plants the seed of disaster, escalating through human conflict into a tragedy of cosmic proportions.
Hwang Jung-min (The Wailing), Zo In-sung (“Moving”), Hoyeon (“Squid Game”), and Eum Moon-suk also star, appearing on the new character posters below. Each is paired with an otherworldly creature.
Creatures that, upon closer examination, resemble Hope‘s international cast that have been largely missing from the film’s promotion thus far.
At the very least, the new posters offer the best look at the creatures so far.
Hope had its World Premiere at the Cannes Film Festival back in May. The festival’s director, Thierry Fremaux, previously teased that Hope “constantly changes genres” to capture a story of “no part of history that’s ever been told before.”
