Director Joseph Archer’s Snapshot tracks a ghost-hunting team’s pursuit of a monster through the pinhole lens of a 19th-century camera, and Deadline has debuted a clip that introduces the supernatural thriller’s unique perspective.
The new clip introduces Snapshot‘s 1:1 circle aspect ratio that emulates the style of the pinhole camera, though it doesn’t reveal much about its intriguing plot.
The supernatural thriller’s synopsis reads: “Set in 1888, the year Jack the Ripper killings begin, an amateur inventor creates the first moving image machine to follow the work of an all-ladies ghost-hunting society who believe the gruesome murders across East London are not being carried out by a man, but a monster. Welcome to the Victorian world of misinformation, fake news and the sensationalist journalism of the era when fabricated stories helped to sell more papers.”
A Jack the Ripper horror movie with a strong POV hook certainly has our attention.
Tom Stourton, Cathy Wippell, Hazel Rogers, Lydia Helen, Nadia Lamin, Rosie-Bella Johnson, Ishtar Currie-Wilson and Freya Parks star.
The clip arrives as Snapshot is set to make its world premiere at the Edinburgh International Film Festival on August 15, followed by a showing at FrightFest later this month.
“Thanks to the wild west of the internet, it’s easier than ever to make money from fake news,” commented Archer, who used to work as a newspaper journalist. “This is strikingly similar to the unregulated journalism of Victorian society. Through Snapshot, I wanted to create an entertaining genre film which highlights the dangers of the modern manipulation of truth.”
Producers are Archer and Cathy Wippell’s UK company Silicon Gothic.
