The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures is celebrating Halloween with upcoming immersive exhibit “The Horror Show,” as well as recognizing the contributions of horror master John Carpenter this October.
Carpenter is among this year’s honorees at the museum’s annual fundraising gala, Deadline reports, co-chaired by Robert Rodriguez, Steven Spielberg and Kate Capshaw, and set for October 17.
The filmmaker will be the recipient of the Luminary Award, designated for artists whose singular contributions have expanded the creative possibilities of filmmaking.
“The Academy Museum Gala is a celebration of the artists and storytellers whose work continues to shape the cultural impact of cinema around the world,” said Academy Museum Director and President Amy Homma. “For our sixth annual Gala, we are honored to recognize John Carpenter, Colman Domingo, and Charlize Theron, whose extraordinary careers exemplify the creativity, innovation, and excellence that continues to move the industry forward.”
Carpenter will also feature in the museum’s horror exhibit that will be on view from September 20, 2026, to July 25, 2027. Carpenter will host three nights of screenings of his films, including Halloween (1978), on September 26.
“The Horror Show” will take visitors on a journey through horror cinema, starting with an introductory gallery sound installation, into “The Hallway” — modeled after the common horror trope—that will lead to six distinctly themed galleries: Gothic, Psychological, Science, Slasher, Religion, and Ghosts.
Each gallery is designed to invite visitors into iconic settings, where they will encounter their favorite creatures, monsters, and objects. The exhibit will also feature film screenings, gallery talks, and educational tours.
Willem Dafoe and Osgood Perkins serve on the advisory team for the exhibit.
