The new horror movie from Jane Schoenbrun (I Saw the TV Glow), Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma debuted in just five theaters on August 7 before expanding to 54 theaters in its second weekend, with a larger rollout planned for this coming weekend. It’s currently in less than 60 theaters nationwide, and the Mubi release is already making box office noise.
Here in the United States in very limited release up to this point, Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma has scared up $1.3 million thus far, with $1.5 million made worldwide so far.
The slasher film debuted with $249,606 in just five New York and Los Angeles theaters in its debut weekend on the scene, with an additional $907,000 pulled in this past weekend.
According to Deadline, Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma is expected to hit around 500 theaters across the United States in its third weekend, still considered a very limited rollout when compared to the 2,000 – 3,000 theaters the traditional studio horror movie is released in. But if Camp Miasma keeps generating money, it’ll likely expand more with each passing week.
For now, the niche horror film passing $1 million in less than 60 theaters is a sign that there is indeed a nice level of interest in the film at the specialty box office. And that bodes well.
“We are seeing more and more fans attracted to this film,” said Mubi’s Mark Boxer. “It’s not one thing. It’s an original film. Jane’s fan base is growing. And there’s the Gillian factor.”
The “Gillian factor” is of course a reference to Gillian Anderson, who stars alongside Hannah Einbinder in Jane Schoenbrun’s Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma.
