Director Brad Anderson’s Session 9 is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, with a special anniversary screening taking place at Mass Mini Con over the weekend. The screening featured a Q&A with writer/director Brad Anderson and writer/actor Stephen Gevedon, and the duo announced at the event that they’re actively developing a prequel to Session 9 all these years later.
Broke Horror Fan’s Alex DiVincenzo got the scoop out of Mass Mini Con, sharing a video on social media from the event that features Brad Anderson’s tease of prequel movie Session 1.
“Would that be of interest? To see a movie that’s about the origin story?” Anderson asked the crowd. “So we’ve been toying with this for a while. But we have a pitch for a movie that’s sort of a prequel to [Session 9]. It’s called Session 1. It’s really about the origin story of Mary Hobbes, the young girl in the movie… the woman who has the multiple personality disorder.”
“It’s about her life, growing up in the late ’60s in Boston, and what happened to her and how she got possessed. And how she killed her family,” Anderson teases. “I’m saying that because we’re trying to get that movie off the ground and we think there’s an audience for that.”
The original Session 9 was released in 2001 and follows a hazardous materials crew hired to clear out an abandoned mental asylum with a dark history. The job seems simple, but as they begin their work, strange discoveries and buried secrets begin to surface. The asylum’s walls whisper with the echoes of the past, and the crew members start to unravel—one by one.
As tensions rise and paranoia takes hold, the question remains: Is the horror inside the asylum a product of their own minds, or is something far more sinister at play?
Brian Keiper wrote here on Bloody Disgusting a few years back, “Session 9 is very different from anything else that was coming out of horror cinema at that time. Because of this, the distributor, USA Films, didn’t really know what to do with it. It was forced to take the long road of the cult movie: obscurity, gradual discovery, and ‘scariest movies you’ve never seen’ lists. The film was released in a couple of small theaters in August of 2001 but quickly disappeared. It was slowly discovered. Today, it enjoys true cult status as one of the most unsettling movies of the century so far.”
