It’s been mostly non-updates for the long awaited Happy Death Day 3 over the years, and you’ll find various articles in the Bloody Disgusting archives from the last several years talking about the current status of the franchise’s planned final film. So what’s the latest, you ask?
Speaking with Deadline, franchise star Jessica Rothe provides the best update on Happy Death Day 3 to date. According to Rothe, they’re now just waiting on Blumhouse and Universal.
“So, Chris Landon and I have actually broken the whole story, which was really fun,” Rothe reveals. “We went to an undisclosed location—a Le Pain Quotidien in between our houses—and sat there for hours and broke the third movie. And now, we’re just waiting for Universal and Blumhouse to [give us] just a little money. This is a Deadline exclusive. You heard it here first.”
Jessica Rothe had mentioned in an interview earlier this year, “We are dedicated to do the legwork on our end, in terms of developing it and getting it to where it needs to be so that it becomes a no-brainer for the studio. Chris feels really strongly, and I agree, he’s come up with an incredible, incredible end of the trilogy and a way to kind of perfectly cap the movies.”
Happy Death Day grossed $125 million worldwide in 2017, but Happy Death Day 2U only made $64 million two years later — no doubt a hurdle in getting the third film off the ground.
Back in 2020, Christopher Landon had revealed that the working title for the third installment was Happy Death Day to Us, said to be “different than the other two films.”
