We’re still a few weeks away from the Halloween season getting into full swing as we enter October, but it’s never too early to start prepping your watchlist for the month. Arguably one of the biggest problems we face is figuring out which streaming service we want to commit to in order to satiate our need for horror movies, and for those who prefer to enjoy titles with as small a pricetag as possible, then Kanopy has got you covered.

Even though these new titles aren’t all outright horror, it’s an interesting blend of both new and old genre titles, with their failure to fit into one genre being what makes them so compelling. Of all of the new releases, October 16 is a day specifically worth noting in your calendar, as you can enjoy the disturbing thriller Sirāt, in which a father and his young song search for his missing daughter, only to ignite a tense descent into danger. Eyes Without a Face is an ahead-of-its-time French film that’s similarly about the lengths a father will go to in order to care for his family, though in this case, it’s about killing women in hopes of being able to surgically graft their faces onto his daughter’s disfigured appearance.
You also get Burnt Offerings, starring Karen Black and Oliver Reed as a couple who begins to collapse under the weight of the supernatural forces who have targeted their home. Additionally, you can enjoy Maximum Overdrive, Stephen King’s one and only foray into the world of feature film directing, adapting his own story about machines coming to life.
