Mahershala Ali broke the news to fans of the supernatural corner of the Marvel Universe recently that, seven years after he was announced to be starring as Blade, the studio took too long to move forward with the project and he had cut his ties with Marvel Studios. In the years since that announcement, we did at least get to see Blade in Deadpool & Wolverine, where he was played by original actor Wesley Snipes. At this point, the closest we’ve gotten to a full-blown horror movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is 2022’s Werewolf by Night Special Presentation, which many hoped would lead to more projects featuring the darker side of the franchise.
Four years later, there’s still no sign of Gael García Bernal reprising his monstrous role in the MCU anytime soon. During a recent Reddit AMA, it sounds as though Bernal is just as disappointed by the lack of updates as audiences are, as he urged fans to demand Marvel make another installment happen.
“I urge you to do whatever you can, whatever is in your power, to push Marvel into some sense of responsibility and also of ambition,” the actor shared. “Because they need to do something with Jack and Ted and Werewolf By Night. It was for me a wonderful project to do, I loved doing it, I had so much fun experiencing that, and for me it was only a taste. I wish I could do more, we had many plans, I hope they materialize one day!”
Since the release of the special, Marvel Studios has experienced diminishing returns with their movie and TV projects, as a variety of releases have earned underwhelming critical and financial responses (outside of the record-shattering Spider-Man: Brand New Day), seemingly causing the studio to scale back various plans they previously had for the franchise. In retrospect, it seems hard to believe horror fans even got the violent, black-and-white special in the first place, where Bernal’s Werewolf by Night gruesomely killed a variety of characters and teamed up with the monstrous Man-Thing.
Bernal isn’t the only one hoping to make a sequel, as director Michael Giacchino shared earlier this year that there were rumblings of potentially doing a follow-up.
“We’re talking about it,” Giacchino explained to Screen Rant over the summer. “Everything takes forever to do. There’s a lot of planning that has to happen. Everything has to fit in a particular place at a particular time.”
He added, “So, nothing moves as fast as we’d like it to. But I hope one day that you will be sitting there watching another Werewolf by Night. That’s my hope.”
Stay tuned for updates on a possible Werewolf by Night sequel.
