It’s hard to find a better example of grassroots success in the horror world than the Hell House LLC franchise. Like many of its peers, the found-footage movie had screenings at various film festivals before landing on home video formats, with it really finding its following on streaming services.
The original movie earned enough support that it spawned an entire series of Hell House LLC films, with last year seeing the release of the fifth film, Hell House LLC: Lineage.
Making this legacy all the more impressive is that the series accomplished this without ever getting a traditional theatrical release. That’s set to change in October, though, as the original movie is headed to theaters for the first time.
Terror Films and Iconic Releasing shared the news on Instagram, explaining, “This Halloween, HELL HOUSE LLC comes to theatres for the first time ever in celebration of its 10th Anniversary. Experience the horror phenomenon like never before, on the big screen starting October 29.”
For those who have never experienced the movie, it follows a group who are opening a one-of-a-kind haunted house in rural New York that is reportedly the site of genuine hauntings. In the weeks leading up to opening, strange incidents occur, culminating in a chaotic and deadly event.
The movie itself taps into the fear that so many Halloween fanatics can’t help but feel whenever we enter a haunted attraction, regardless of the production value (or lack thereof). Entering the dark environment, despite knowing the attraction was made for entertainment purposes, you can’t help but wonder if maybe this is the one time the danger could actually be real.
Over the course of five movies, we’ve learned a lot more about the hotel where the movies take place and just how dark its past really is. While watching a found-footage movie at home adds an extra layer of authenticity to the experience, as we lean closer to determine if we really heard what we thought we heard and really saw what we thought we saw, getting to see a cult classic on the big screen is an event a decade in the making.
While a sixth film isn’t yet confirmed, getting one movie roughly every two years means we likely haven’t seen the last of Hell House LLC. Stay tuned for updates on the franchise and check local listings for showtimes.
