The day after Halloween can often feel apocalyptic, as costumes and decorations are often found littering the sidewalks, and the candy aisle of the grocery store looks decimated. And, for horror fans, the world might as well be over, knowing that we have to wait another year for the best time of the year to roll around. In Shudder‘s new movie Hallowarrior, there’s a much more literal apocalypse to explore, as one girl traverses the country in the wake of an apocalypse in hopes of gathering Halloween supplies.
Hallowarrior is set to hit Shudder on October 16 and the streamer has released the movie’s first trailer, which you can see below.
The movie is described, “Pumpkin, the last girl on earth and sole survivor of a humanity-ending plague, scavenges the wasteland for supplies on the eve of Halloween. Her lonely holiday ritual is interrupted by the arrival of a savage gang of raiders at her doorstep led by the fearsome Thalia. Outnumbered and armed with candy, wit and weapons, Pumpkin must ferociously fight back to survive the night.”
Hallowarrior stars Milly Shapiro, Ajani Russell, AJ Bowen, and Shannyn Sossamon.
“Hallowarrior is a love letter to horror and Halloween, and I am thrilled that the film has found its home with a distributor whose brand is synonymous with both,” writer/director Ben Sottak previously shared of the movie. “It’s an honor to have Hallowarrior join the Shudder family, and a treat to introduce their audience to this fun, scary, gory film along with its badass lead, Pumpkin, played by the incredible Milly Shapiro.”
Not only does the premise of the movie feel like a perfect fit for Shudder, but it also stars a number of genre favorites. Shapiro’s role as Charlie in Hereditary is iconic, with her character’s demise being one of the most unsettling sequences in horror of the last decade. Bowen has a number of cult classics to his name, such as The House of the Devil and You’re Next. Sossamon’s early forays into the genre world include The Order, Catacombs, and One Missed Call, but has more recent small-screen endeavors like Sleepy Hollow and Wayward Pines.
While there are countless genre movies out there that aim to cash in on the excitement of Halloween, the premise of Hallowarrior feels like something we haven’t quite seen before and could hopefully become an annual October watch.
