Whether you’ve been aware of the lore of Backrooms for years, courtesy of the various creepypasta stories that have circulated online, or if you’ve only seen the movie directed by Kane Parsons, it’s clear that there’s an endless amount of mythology to uncover in this world. With Parsons having already made so many shorts exploring the concept, one might think he had run out of ideas, but as confirmed by this year’s Backrooms, he’s clearly only scratching the surface of this terrifying realm. Given that the A24 release went on to become the studio’s top-grossing movie, everyone is wondering what this means for a sequel, and Parsons already has some hopes in mind.
Speaking with Deadline, Parsons explained how his “dream scenario” would be to expand his take on the material with a limited series. Additionally, he teased that, rather than being a sequel that merely continues the events of this world, it’s how he’d like to wrap everything up.
“I never stop making things … There’s a few things that I would love to talk about when I can soon,” Parsons shared with the outlet. “I’ve said since the very beginning that the dream scenario would be a limited series for Backrooms to get to the main ending.”
The lore of this realm goes back decades, but Parsons began releasing YouTube videos about the phenomenon in 2022. The filmmaker’s vision of the mythos might not be the only take on the material, though it’s heavily influenced how other storytellers craft narratives about the concept. Even though the feature-film adaptation of the world impressed audiences and critics, Parsons said that it has “always been a plan” to take the shorts narratively and “it’s just been about finding the proper way to package that.”
“I can’t say anything but there’s been a very set arc to the whole thing from the beginning, and I just feel absurdly excited at the idea of actually being able to follow through on all of it,” he added.
For some audiences, Parsons’ Backrooms felt like it came out of nowhere, which made it all the more surprising when it performed so well. The filmmaker, however, was confident that it would find an audience.
“I wasn’t big into the [box-office] projections,” Parsons confessed. “That’s not the area that I’m interested in following for the most part. I think it distracts from what I actually enjoy with the work. But I knew there would be a certain level of people showing up for Backrooms given how ingrained in the world and the community online it already had been. So, I knew people would be curious, but the degree to which it burst into audiences outside of that was not something I anticipated.”
While the success of Backrooms has resulted in many potential deals for Parsons, there are currently no announced plans in regards to what could be next for his adaptation.
