‘Color Out of Space’s Madeleine Arthur Joins Thriller ‘Doula’

Madeleine Arthur and Nicolas Cage star in 'Color Out of Space'

One of the best adaptations of H.P. Lovecraft of all time is Color Out of Space, which premiered in 2019 before officially being released in 2020. Starring Nicolas Cage and produced by Elijah Wood, the mind-bending movie honored the cosmic roots of the original short story and indescribable nature of the terror. Unfortunately, it was one of many 2020 releases that feels entirely overlooked in retrospect, given the way the world changed when the coronavirus pandemic sent the world into a global quarantine just weeks after its release. This means genre audiences were denied the chance to witness the talents of Madeleine Arthur, though a new project might correct that.

Deadline reports today that the actor, alongside Dianne Doan (Warrior), has joined the new psychological thriller Doula from writer-director Goldie Jones. Production on the project is set to kick off on October 1. James J Yi (Gook) is producing alongside Alice Teufack, Judd Tilyard (Silent Night), and Verity Fiction. Andrea Chung (The Card Counter) is executive-producing with Carvel Rock Pictures along with Kristine Estorninos.

The outlet describes the movie, “Inspired by strange true events, a doula (Doan) arrives at an isolated mountain cabin to help with a difficult delivery, only to become trapped alongside her pregnant client (Arthur) in a sadistic, reality-bending game where escape may come at a terrible price.”

It hasn’t yet been revealed what the strange true events are that inspired the story, but based on the description, the actual events sound harrowing. Given the movie’s title, it’s easy to jump right to the assumption that the doula is the one responsible for the terror, though the description of the movie sounds like both characters will undergo a horrifying ordeal.

Doula marks Jones’ directorial feature debut, having previously directed shorts Rage and I’m Sorry, I Tried, I Love You.

There is currently no release date for Doula, so stay tuned for more details as we receive them.
