The Southampton Playhouse in my neck of the woods of Southampton, New York is celebrating Halloween all month long with the return of their Horror on Hill Street programming, featuring exclusive screenings of some legendary horror and thriller classics from the 1980s.
This year’s lineup includes director Abel Ferrara’s grimy and disturbing tale of revenge on the mean streets of NYC, Ms. 45, screening at the Playhouse on Thursday, October 22.
The screening of the 1981 cult classic will feature live musical accompaniment, with Joe Delia performing live music and injecting new layers of artistry into this powerful, enduring story.
The Southampton Playhouse previews, “A jolting revenge thriller from underground filmmaking legend Abel Ferrara (King of New York), Ms. 45 turns 45 at the Playhouse with an immersive, one-of-a-kind opportunity to revisit this classic in a whole new way.”
A controversial achievement upon its release, Ms. 45 has been celebrated over the years as an early example of feminist horror. After mute seamstress Thana (Zoe Lund) experiences a harrowing assault on her way home from her work, she begins exacting revenge against toxic men throughout a grimy New York City with her .45 caliber pistol.
Culminating with a memorable Halloween party showdown, Ms. 45 is a gripping and subversive look at one woman taking charge against an abusive society.
