Genre-Bending Horror-Comedy ‘Ghost in the Cell’ Gets Home Video Release Date

Filmmaker Joko Anwar just unleashed his ambitious and boundary-pushing Ghost in the Cell in theaters earlier this month, and Well Go USA Entertainment has now revealed the movie’s release on home video.

Ghost in the Cell will debut on Digital on October 27 before landing on 4K Ultra HD/Blu-ray Combo on November 17.

Director Joko Anwar (Gundala, Satan’s Slaves, Smothered) plunges viewers into a high-security prison ruled by feuding gangs and a tyrannical warden. The arrival of a new inmate kicks off a series of mysterious gruesome murders that leave its victims on morbid display. The hapless inmates trapped in the prison must overcome their rivalries to unmask an invisible, otherworldly enemy. No one is safe as the cells cage in the horrors and a ghost roams the prison with murderous intent.

Starring in Ghost in the Cell are Abimana Aryasatya, Almanzo Konoralma, Aming Sugandhi, Arswendy Bening Swara, Bront Palarae, and Dimas Danang Suryonegoro. Included in the home video release is the featurette “Behind the Cell,” which dives into the making of the movie.

“We’re thrilled to bring Ghost in the Cell to North America,” said distributor Well Go USA CEO Doris Pfardrescher. “As longtime fans of Joko Anwar, having previously released his film Gundala, we’ve seen firsthand how strongly his work resonates with audiences here. Ghost in the Cell is an absolute blast – it’s wildly entertaining and deliciously gory in all the right ways.”

While Ghost in the Cell might not be earning the same wide release as other horror titles like Resident Evil or the upcoming Other Mommy, the movie has really blown critics away. With over two dozen reviews calculated on Rotten Tomatoes, the movie maintains 100% positive reactions.

In his four of out five skulls review on Bloody Disgusting, Rob Hunter explained, “Ghost in the Cell is easily Anwar’s best, most fully realized film yet. It’s a genre bender that goes high in its commentary, goes low in its broadly comic silliness, and fills its middle with wet, sticky, beautifully crafted practical effects. As if all of that isn’t enough of a reason to watch, the film also joins the too-short list of movies that feature the cast dancing their asses off during the end credits. Yes, this gory, violent, prison-set film from Indonesia is on the same short list as The 40-Year-Old Virgin. What the f-ck, indeed.”

Ghost in the Cell will debut on Digital on October 27 before landing on 4K Ultra HD/Blu-ray Combo on November 17.
