There can simply never be enough adaptations of Charles Dickens‘ A Christmas Carol, which is why filmmaker Ti West is stepping in to deliver his own take on the material. A number of beloved actors have embraced the role of Ebenezer Scrooge over the years, and while Johnny Depp already has a number of iconic figures to his name, he’s now set to put his mark on the miser in Ebenezer.
In a new featurette for the upcoming release, you can see Depp embracing the identity of the literary character, as his costars also explain what makes this take on the material so different. You can see the new Ebenezer featurette below.
This November, Johnny Depp is Ebenezer Scrooge. The name you know, the story you don’t. From Ti West, Ebenezer also stars Rupert Grint, Andrea Riseborough, Sam Claflin, Daisy Ridley, Arthur Conti, Ellie Bamber, Henry Lloyd-Hughes, Charlie Murphy, with Tramell Tillman and Ian McKellen.
There have been dozens of adaptations of A Christmas Carol in live-action, all of which attempt to showcase how it’s never too late to become the person that makes a positive impact on the world, no matter what you’ve done in your past. In many versions of the story, the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come not just shows Ebenezer how no one will miss him when he dies, but that his legacy and his actions will impact those in his orbit.
Given how many of these adaptations are designed to appeal to audiences of all ages, adaptations don’t highlight the darker components of Scrooge’s impending death. One significant exception, though, is the Andy Serkis-directed A Christmas Carol from 2019. The three-part TV event was written by Peaky Blinders‘ Steven Knight, which should automatically signal that this would be a much grittier endeavor.
Starring Guy Pearce, the adaptation didn’t hold back on the darker elements of the storyline, which leaned much more heavily into the horror components that come with the idea of ghosts returning from beyond to taunt Scrooge. There were also multiple implications of sexual assault against minors as well as forced prostitution against Mary Cratchit.
With West’s horror background, ranging from The House of the Devil to The Sacrament to the X trilogy, it’s unclear at this point just how intense this new Ebenezer will be.
Ebenezer will hit theaters on November 13.
