It’s difficult to overstate just how significant an achievement Guillermo del Toro‘s Pan’s Labyrinth is. At the time of release, del Toro was a burgeoning force in the horror realm, thanks to movies like Cronos, Blade II, The Devil’s Backbone, and Hellboy. With Pan’s Labyrinth, though, the filmmaker showcased how inventive and ambitious he was when he blended together darkly fantastical elements with a period drama.
The movie caught the attention of various prestigious awards groups and earned del Toro multiple Oscar nominations, which opened up a number of doors for him in Hollywood. It might have taken another decade before he scored an Oscar for Best Director and Best Picture with The Shape of Water, but many still regard Pan’s Labyrinth as his masterpiece.
After securing a theatrical re-release in honor of its 20th anniversary, Pan’s Labyrinth is heading to home video. Pan’s Labyrinth will be available to own digitally beginning November 10, followed by the 4K + Blu-ray Collector’s Edition SteelBook and Blu-ray Collectors Edition on December 1. It will then be available for digital rental (VOD) on December 8, and due to overwhelming demand, Cineverse will release a 4K + Blu-ray Collector’s Edition on December 29. The physical pre-order has already set a record as the number one home entertainment pre-order launch of all time for Cineverse.
This follows a return to theatres, including first-time releases in 4K and 3D, that grossed more than $2 million at the box office, and led to increased interest in the film and the human-led creativity and imagination that has led to three Oscar wins plus critical and fan acclaim since 2006, including a record standing ovation at Cannes.
The 4K restoration was overseen by del Toro, taken directly from the original 35mm elements.
