‘Obsession’ Director Reveals the Hidden Detail “Nobody” Noticed That Makes Nikki More Disturbing

It’s been six month since Obsession has been released and we’re still uncovering various clues and details about the movie that were easy to overlook on initial viewings. Some audiences saw the movie in theaters multiple times, but with the movie hitting various streaming services, more viewers have access to it and can easily rewind and rewatch it repeatedly.

Don’t feel bad if there are details that you didn’t pick up on, as writer/director Curry Barker himself revealed in an interview that “nobody picked up” on one clue in particular.

After Bear (Michael Johnston) wishes for Nikki (Inde Navarrette) to love him, what starts as the appearance of genuine feelings descends into, well, obsessive territory. At one point in the movie, Nikki has prepared lunch for Bear, and packs the meal with Polaroids. One photo is a candid of Bear, which is labeled “You,” and the other photo is of Nikki with Bear sleeping, which is labeled “Not me.” While the “not me” is a clue about Nikki no longer being in control of herself, the photo of Bear has a darker detail.

“If you rewatch the movie, when he pulls out his lunchbox, and he’s looking at the pictures, do you remember the two pictures he looks at?” Curry explained to Movie TV News. “Well, if you look at the one that says ‘you,’ it’s a picture of Bear. The picture is taken from the perspective of the ceiling. The only way she could have taken that picture is if she was on the ceiling.”

He continued, “I thought it would be creepy if … nobody ever mentioned, nobody ever picked up on this, so, it didn’t work. But, I guess I thought it would be creepy if, however she took the picture, somehow she got on the ceiling to take it. So, who knows what she did. But just kind of like, what did she do? I don’t know, but she was on the ceiling.”

There have been countless theories about Obsession ever since it was released, with one such hypothesis being that Nikki had become possessed by an otherworldly force. Nikki demonstrates a number of deranged behaviors, though everything she does is within the bounds of human physicality.

Barker might not have outright revealed how Nikki took the photo from the ceiling, especially without Bear noticing, but one explanation could be that Nikki earned otherworldly abilities as a reaction to the One Wish Willow that allowed her to somehow climb the ceiling without detection. However, Barker himself only briefly pointing out the detail would imply that he didn’t have a specific explanation for how the photo was taken, more that this detail was included to ignite theories.

With Obsession set to arrive on Netflix this month, more audiences will be able to revisit its horrors.
