This morning, Waxwork Records put up for pre-order two different vinyl releases for fans of The Thing: the complete score from Ennio Morricone and the “lost cues” from John Carpenter!
The score to The Thing is a landmark musical composition that is cold, dark, minimal, and effective, Waxwork notes when detailing the deluxe film score reissue. The classic soundtrack composed by Ennio Morricone effectively captures the cold, isolated tone of the story and film, and marks one of the few John Carpenter directed films that Carpenter did not score himself.
Features include the complete Morricone score re-mastered from the original master tapes, 180 gram “Blood Sample” colored vinyl (Crystal Clear and Blood Red Color In Color Effect w/ Blood Red Splatter), new artwork by Phantom City Creative, deluxe heavyweight packaging including satin coated old-style gatefold jackets with UV spot-gloss varnish, and an 11” x 22” poster.
And then there’s John Carpenter’s Lost Cues: The Thing, an entirely separate release. Composed and performed by director John Carpenter and including performances by Cody Carpenter and Daniel Davies, Lost Cues features unreleased musical cues from The Thing!
When editing down The Thing in 1982, Carpenter felt that the film could benefit by the inclusion of additional music to fill in gaps. This additional music would sonically tie the overall film together. Taking the initiative, Carpenter performed and recorded multiple synth-driven cues in his renowned scoring style and edited them into the film.
The original masters featuring these bonus cues have been lost to time. In 2019, Waxwork Records teamed with Sacred Bones Records, approached John Carpenter about a release of this music, and he graciously agreed to faithfully perform and record the tracks for a special vinyl 12” EP featuring his son, Cody Carpenter, as well as Daniel Davies.
