A Letter From the Editor RE: ‘Meat Train’, Help Save Horror!

Published

on

UPDATE: Theater listing is growing, SOME tickets are available online The other day we reported that Lionsgate’s The Midnight Meat Train (review) was going to make its first stop in cheapy $1 theaters, today were getting behind a fallen brother to help prove a point – that horror fans won’t go down without a fight! Lionsgate called us immediately following the news post, and we made dozens of phone calls over the past 24 hours… what we learned is that there is a way to help! Inside you’ll find out how to take on an empire with the click of a single button…

UPDATE: I bought ten tickets online, join in. Check times for tomorrow… someone feel free to use these (I don’t live there…)

UPDATE: Tickets are difficult to find online…

Update #2: Can someone please tell me how or where I can buy tickets online? This is ridiculous…

UPDATE #3 from BC (and this is crazyyyy) “Only theaters in 40 miles I can find playing it. Here’s the weird thing about the Phoenix Adlabs (its not Phoenix, its in Norwalk, which is out past Pomona): it seems to be playing on 2 screens (cool!) but if you click on the theater itself, which will show you all listings for the theater – MMT doesn’t show up at all. It has 8 screens, but it will only list 6 movies (MMT, being on 2, would total 8)… it’s magic!!! — so basically all other films are available for online ticketing, just not MMT. Odd, right?

This piece will be updated throughout the day:

SpookyDan and I have spent the good part of the past 24 hours doing interviews and making phone calls trying to figure out how 1+1 doesn’t equal 2. Clive Barker’s The Midnight Meat Train was set up to fail, being dumped in $1 discount theaters, with no theater listing provided, with no explanation on how to even buy tickets.

Then Lionsgate calls… they “assure me” that I’m reporting a non-story and that they truly, with all their hearts, want Clive Barker’s latest adaptation to succeed.

The math doesn’t add up.

Shocking as it may sound, Lionsgate has asked us to get behind the film! But it’s obiously a rouse, a cunning attempt to make it look like they care about the movie.

Business is business as this isn’t the first time a movie has been dumped into limited theaters. That’s fine, and if a studio doesn’t want to spend millions of dollars on P+A (marketing), or spends tens of thousands making prints, they are only doing what’s best for the stockholders and for their business.

But what we found interesting was that the film is only opening in $1 discount theaters. It says to me that Lionsgate wants the movie to make as little money as possible – for whatever reason that may be, it’s weird.

After the numerous interviews and phone calls made, we have made some very important discoveries, but unfortunately no one is willing to speak on record. But what we can do is tell you guys that buying tickets to see THE MIDNIGHT MEAT TRAIN will in fact help the filmmakers and Clive Barker. For real this time…

So I say we get behind a fallen brother. We buy tickets (even if we’re not able to go, or live in a different State) and attempt to sell out every showing of the film. Lionsgate (so they say) wants the film to succeed, so they should be excited to see fans helping out Clive and his film, right?

We love the film here at Bloody-Disgusting and are 100% getting behind it. Let’s make history here together, today, and donate some time and money to proving to the world that horror fans are king and won’t take this sh*t any longer.

SO HERE’S WHAT TO DO:

-Go to FANDANGO.com and find a showing of Midnight Meat Train and purchase a ticket (if you can find a theater that actually allows you to purchase online), or two, or ten (I’m going to go buy ten immediately following this post) – they’re only a dollar or two, so consider it a donation to horror!

– Also, if you see the film is playing in a different theater than any listed below, please send me an e-mail to submit@bloody-disgusting.com

Most Important: Spread the word, post it on blogs, talk about it in forums, get your fellow horror fiends to purchase tickets! Show fans where it’s playing, let’s try and fill these theaters!

-Send an e-mail around to your co-workers ASAP (the day is ending)

-Digg this story (see above), it will help spread the word

-Start with Friday showings as it’s getting late already. Hit ’em where it hurts, we sell these suckers out, we win the battle. A big battle.

-Lastly, put MMT TICKETS in the subject line and e-mail your receipts to submit@bloody-disgusting.com, the person who purchases the most tickets will be sent a very special “thank you” package from Bloody-Disgusting

Dev Patel’s ‘Monkey Man’ Is Now Available to Watch at Home!

Published

After pulling in $28 million at the worldwide box office this month, director (and star) Dev Patel’s critically acclaimed action-thriller Monkey Man is now available to watch at home.

You can rent Monkey Man for $19.99 or digitally purchase the film for $24.99!

Monkey Man is currently 88% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, with Bloody Disgusting’s head critic Meagan Navarro awarding the film 4.5/5 stars in her review out of SXSW back in March.

Meagan raves, “While the violence onscreen is palpable and painful, it’s not just the exquisite fight choreography and thrilling action set pieces that set Monkey Man apart but also its political consciousness, unique narrative structure, and myth-making scale.”

“While Monkey Man pays tribute to all of the action genre’s greats, from the Indonesian action classics to Korean revenge cinema and even a John Wick joke or two, Dev Patel’s cultural spin and unique narrative structure leave behind all influences in the dust for new terrain,” Meagan’s review continues.

She adds, “Monkey Man presents Dev Patel as a new action hero, a tenacious underdog with a penetrating stare who bites, bludgeons, and stabs his way through bodies to gloriously bloody excess. More excitingly, the film introduces Patel as a strong visionary right out of the gate.”

Inspired by the legend of Hanuman, Monkey Man stars Patel as Kid, an anonymous young man who ekes out a meager living in an underground fight club where, night after night, wearing a gorilla mask, he is beaten bloody by more popular fighters for cash. After years of suppressed rage, Kid discovers a way to infiltrate the enclave of the city’s sinister elite. As his childhood trauma boils over, his mysteriously scarred hands unleash an explosive campaign of retribution to settle the score with the men who took everything from him.

Monkey Man is produced by Jordan Peele’s Monkeypaw Productions.
