Eli Roth on Bloody ‘Piranha’ Remake, 3-D Technology
While out promoting Lionsgate Home Entertainment’s Blu-ray release of Cabin Fever, director Eli Roth revealed some new info on his forthcoming cameo in Dimension Films’ 3-D remake of Piranha, while also explaining that 3-D needs to be used for the right kind of film. Roth talks briefly about his cameo in Alex Aja’s Piranha redo.
“[Laughs] You guys will see. That was a fun one. Alexandre Aja called me and said, ‘I have something really fun for you’. So I don’t wanna give anything away. It was a fun time. It was two of the most fun days of shooting I’ve ever had.”
Rumors have circulated that Roth is the judge of a wet t-shirt contest during the spring break massacre. Speaking of blood, there is speculation that there’s more blood in Piranha than Kill Bill.
“Yeah, technically there is,” Roth tells BD. “I mean, they spilled something like 7,000 gallons of blood. I’ve actually seen a cut of Piranha 3-D, it’s amazing. Unbelievable. He just completely outdid himself in the film.”
When Piranha hits theaters in August it will be in 3-D. Roth talks a bit about the future and the technoogy.
“I don’t know, it depends on what the story is,” Roth says in response to the question of whether he’s looking to do a film in 3-D. “I like 3-D a lot. So if the story works, sure, I’d love to. But I think it’s a story element, it’s like CG, or violence. It’s one of these things that, I think putting a movie in 3-D doesn’t automatically make it better. And I think if you’re gonna do a movie in 3-D, you should have a good reason for it, and understand how to use it, and how to make the most of the medium. I don’t think Paranormal Activity would’ve been better in 3-D. So I really think it depends on the story you’re telling.”
Piranha 3D arrives in theaters August 27.

Jennifer E. Montgomery makes her feature directorial debut from a script she co-wrote with director of photography Andrew Davis, inspired by Montgomery’s first-hand experience with tragedy involving her best friend.
“Months before the incident, there were signals that her world was unraveling,” says Montgomery. “I could feel the pressure building, though I didn’t know what form it would take. I never could have known what violence would come, and I certainly never imagined making a film about it.”
Austin Stowell (“NCIS: Origins”), Suraj Sharma (Happy Death Day 2U), Mojean Aria (Reminiscence), Amol Shah (“For All Mankind”), and Zenobia Shroff (“Ms. Marvel”) round out the cast.
