Update: Click here for our massive image gallery that was just updated! After we broke the news earlier this week, it was officially announced today that U.S. rights to Jaume Balaguero and Paco Plaza’s REC 2 (review), the sequel to their cult film, REC have been picked up by Magnet Releasing, the genre label of the Wagner/Cuban Company’s Magnolia Pictures. Magnet plans an early July theatrical release for the film, which will be released through Magnolia/Magnet’s Ultra VOD program, debuting a month prior on VOD platforms nationwide. You do NOT want to miss this in a theater!
REC told the story of a quarantined apartment building infected with a ferocious virus that spread a terrifying form of demonic possession to the trapped inhabitants. REC 2 kicks off shortly after the events of the first film, when a medical officer and a SWAT team armed with video cameras are sent into the sealed off apartment building to try and neutralize the situation.

Without a doubt, `[REC] 2′ is the scariest film of the year,” commented Magnolia SVP Tom Quinn who negotiated the deal for the acquisition in a statement. “Nobody does horror as terrifying as directors Jaume Ballaguero and Paco Plaza. It’s a great fit for Magnet.

“Old-school American horror is back as Adam Green’s iconic Hatchet series returns in a blood-soaked, fully Unrated collection, uniting all four films for the first time.

“Unleashed at a time when the fun of 80s slashers had all but disappeared from the cinematic landscape, Hatchet ushered in a new era of terror with its unapologetic brutality and introduction of Victor Crowley, the modern bogeyman, who ruthlessly hunts those who dare tread into his swamp. With each installment, the stakes escalate, delivering bigger, bloodier scares and a relentless barrage of inventive kills. So gather all your pieces, because it’s time to return to his swamp and learn once and for all that some legends truly never die.”

Other films coming soon from Dark Sky Selects include The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974), The House of the Devil, The Innkeepers, and Faces of Death. Stay tuned for updates.
