Kevin Smith Compares ‘Red State’ to ‘Race With the Devil’

Published

on

Kevin Smith, who somehow found his own financing for Red State, talked with Film School Rejects about the plot of the thriller that’s said to begin shooting this coming July. “It’s very reminiscent of Race with the Devil,” Smith tells the site. “That’s such a favorite movie of mine. When I was a kid it was just such a terrifying notion. It’s where you’re on vacation and you just happen to see some mother fuckers sacrificing a virgin, they kill your dog, and the chase you in your winnebago. There’s nothing more horrifying than that! You can keep your fucking thirty-foot shark, that’s terrifying! It’s certainly not that, but it’s very much in that spirit of people in the wrong place at the wrong time. Instead of going with devil worship we’re going the other direction. It deals with intense religious worship. It’s religious fundamentalism.” Click the link below for more.

Nightborn release date

Shudder has acquired Nightborn, the new dark fable from Hatching filmmaker Hanna Bergholm, THR reports this morning.

Nightborn will make its premiere at Fantasia on  July 22 before debuting on Shudder on July 31.

In Nightborn, “With dreams of starting a perfect family, Saga and her British husband Jon move to the isolated house where she spent much of her childhood, deep in the Finnish forest. But as soon as their baby is born, despite the reassurance of all around her, Saga knows there’s something terribly wrong with her son. As their marriage starts to crack, Jon struggles to support his wife, but only Saga suspects the terrible truth about her newborn.”

Seidi Haarla (Compartment No. 6) and Rupert Grint (Knock at the Cabin, “Servant”) star in the film described as ” a visceral, gripping and terrifying dark fable about motherhood and unconditional maternal love.”

The cast also includes Pamela Tola, Pirkko Saisio, Rebecca Lacey and John Thomson.

“Hanna Bergholm’s audacious sophomore follow up to Hatching delivers tension and shocking moments surrounding parenthood and self discovery — with a touch of humor,” said Emily Gotto, senior vice president of acquisitions and production at Shudder. “We are thrilled to share Nightborn with audiences.”

Bergholm previously explored the darker aspects of motherhood with her horror fairy tale debut, Hatching, a coming-of-age creature feature about a girl who hatches a mysterious egg found in the woods.
