Uni Dreams Tween With Genre Blending ‘Maximum Ride’
Heat Vision is reporting that Universal Pictures is aiming to tap into the tween market by acquiring the feature film adaptation rights to Maximum Ride, which recently went into turnaround by Columbia Pictures. Catherine Hardwicke (Twilight, Lords of Dogtown, Thirteen) remains attached to direct with a new screenplay being penned by Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby (Iron Man, Cowboys and Aliens). The books, which see Patterson in young-adult mode, chronicles six teens known as the Flock who are genetically altered so they are part human and part bird. Learning to fly, they escape the laboratory where they have been housed and are pursued by a pack of creatures called the Erasers that are part human and part wolf. Personally, I’d like to see Hardwicke tackle something completely out of the box, or just go back to doing teen drama.

When nurse Julia finds herself trapped inside the home of her dementia patient, she begins to suspect things are not what they seem; something demonic is seeping through the cracks of this old home. Trapped and with nowhere to turn, Julia soon finds herself in battle to rid the house of this evil before it is too late.

“This film depicts the most harrowing 90 minutes of our protagonist’s life, and I felt that the most visceral way to really feel this was to do a single-shot film,” O’Brien previously teased. “We are with her every step and misstep she takes – through the unraveling of the mystery to the horror of her discovery. It’s a fun, twisty roller-coaster ride that puts a new spin on exorcisms.”
Bury the Devil is the first installment in a planned trilogy. The prequel, Bury the Devil: Origin, is already in development with O’Brien returning to the helm.
O’Brien produces along with Philip Kalin-Hajdu (The Sacrifice Game) and Benoit Beaulieu (Turbo Kid).
