Horror In Your House’s ‘Tormented’ Selection
Anchor Bay leads a nice week of releases with The Evil Dead on Blu-ray. Sure, you have a few versions sitting around, but you don’t have it in the crystal clarity that is Blu-ray, yet. Troma makes a welcome appearance as well, releasing Dead Eyes Open and the aptly named heavy metal horror flick, Heavy Mental. Other notables include releases from IFC Films, The Red Riding trilogy on Blu-ray/DVD and the British Horror/Comedy, Tormented. I will be dropping some cash on Tuesday, will you?
Horror in Your House
August 30th, 2010
BRAINJACKED – Unearthed Films
A teenager discovers a sinister underground world ran by a maniacal neurosurgeon. The doctor (who has a drill for an arm) specializes in a form of brain surgery that involves drilling directly into the skull in order to relieve pressure or ancient spirits from the patient. Bent on mind control, the psycho doctor injects microchips into his patient’s brains which garners him control over their actions.
CARNIVOUROUS (Blu-Ray/DVD) – Living Arts
A voodoo spell awakens a giant deadly serpent with the head of an alligator; the only man for the job is special ops veteran and master hunter, Nick Kirabo (DMX).
CLEAR LAKE, WI – Osiris Entertainment
In 1993, a small town, Clear Lake, was overcome by a strange disease – wiping out many of the townsfolk. The town’s preacher blamed the disease on the sinners within the town. The preacher, along with a group of five brainwashed high school kids go on a three day spree of kidnapping and killing accused offenders in a self-proclaimed “Holy War.” 15 years later, the five boys have come back to the sleepy town to tell their story, but strange occurrences begin happening all over again.
DEAD EYES OPEN – Troma
After running out of gas in the German countryside, a group of young friends find themselves trapped, isolated, and without a clue as to where they are. Making matters worse, a blood thirsty lunatic chases them into a run-down farmhouse, where the dead walk freely. Includes a special appearance by George Romero.
THE EVIL DEAD (Limited Edition) (Blu-Ray) – Anchor Bay
Sam Raimi’s first feature film, a cult classic by any measure, tells the story of Ash (Bruce Campbell) and his friends on their not so routine woodland cabin trip. This release features all new commentary with Sam Raimi, Robert Tapert, and Bruce Campbell and a smorgasbord of special features.
MICAH SAYS: I have a dog named Ash and three (of the five) DVD releases of this film. This will be the last version I ever purchase, I swear (Yeah, right). With as many versions of this film that are currently out there, it wouldn’t be a surprise, long after humans are extinct, if some alien race finds a copy of The Evil Dead and uses it to judge our society.
HEAVY MENTAL – Troma
Garage Band rock star, Ace, receives a guitar that once belonged to the forefather of heavy metal, Eddie Lee Stryker. Ace quickly realizes the guitar is possessed by Eddie, who was murdered by Mrs. Delicious. Mrs. Delicious and her sexy gang have been killing anyone who borrowed money from their boss and was unable to pay up. Ace is forced to slay his way through the gang to save his friends and avenge the death of his heavy metal hero.
MICAH SAYS: Fully supportive of heavy metal themed horror, no matter how cheesy. Rock `n’ Roll Nightmare, Black Roses, Trick or Treat – bring it all on!
POINT OF TERROR – Scorpion Records
A sexploitation film about a night club singer who has dreams he may be involved in adultery and murder, only to find out his dreams may be real.
RED RIDING TRILOGY (Blu-Ray/DVD) – IFC Independent Film
A three film neo-noir epic, based on factual events about the famed “Yorkshire Ripper” who terrorized England in the 1970s and `80s. Intertwining stories based around several characters are explored through the visions of three acclaimed directors (Julian Jarrold, James Marsh, Anand Tucker).
THE SPELL – Celebrity Video Dist

‘Hokum’ Heads Home to Digital Tomorrow Ahead of Physical Media Release in August
After scaring up a strong theatrical run, Oddity director Damian McCarthy’s Hokum heads home to Digital this week.
Settle in for a spooky supernatural chiller as Hokum arrives on all Digital platforms to rent or own beginning June 2, followed by a Blu-ray/4K Ultra HD Combo and DVD release on August 11, 2026.
Adam Scott (“Severance”) stars in Hokum as reclusive novelist Ohm Bauman. When he retreats to a remote Irish inn to scatter his parents’ ashes, the staff’s tales of an ancient witch haunting the honeymoon suite take hold of his mind. Disturbing visions and a shocking disappearance draw Ohm into a nightmarish confrontation with the darkest corners of his past.
Peter Coonan (“The Alienist: Angel of Darkness”), David Wilmot (“Station Eleven”), Florence Ordesh (“Departure”), Michael Patric (“Frontier”), Will O’Connell (“Game of Thrones”), Brendan Conroy (“Bodkin”), and Austin Amelio (“The Walking Dead”) also star.
Get a peek at the upcoming physical media release below, including a few special features.
Spooky Pictures’ Roy Lee (Weapons) & Steven Schneider (Insidious) produce alongside Image Nation’s Derek Dauchy (Late Night with the Devil), Tailored Film’s Ruth Treacy, Julianne Forde, & Mairtín de Barra, and Cweature Features’ Ken Kao & Josh Rosenbaum.
I wrote in my review for Bloody Disgusting, “A quaint Irish hotel with a deeply haunted history awaits an American writer in McCarthy’s third outing, continuing his streak for folkloric tales of supernatural karma and spine-tingling terror with a dark sense of humor.”
What’s next from Damian McCarthy? He’s currently writing a haunted house movie, but recent comments suggest he may be moving into other genres beyond that upcoming project.
