‘Marianne’ Trailer Will Have You Grinding Your Teeth!

Published

on

A chilling trailer recently made its way online for Swedish helmer Filip Tegstedt’s Marianne, a Swedish independent film that is a small town psychological horror drama set in Östersund with roots in Swedish folklore.

Peter Stormare (Fargo, The Big Lebowski, Armageddon), Thomas Hedengran (Frostbiten, Jägarna, Den Osynlige), and Tintin Anderzon all star.

Marianne is a psychological horror film about a broken family in the small isolated town of Östersund, located up in the Swedish northlands. Among the pine woods, the lakes, the snowy mountains and the midnight summer sun, the story takes place on the fuzzy border where fantasy and reality meet.

Inside you’ll find a long synopsis and the trailer. What say you? Looks kinda insane, no? (LOVE the poster.) Become a fan on Facebook.
45 year old Krister’s wife Eva has just passed away in a car accident, and now he’s alone with the 18 year old daughter Sandra who hates his guts, and a 6 months old daughter who he doesn’t really know how to take care of .

At night he’s haunted by bad nightmares about what happened the night Eva died, and guilt for the pain he’s caused Sandra over the years as an absent father. He experiences visits in his sleep from a woman dressed in green, looking for revenge. Someone who comes to him via his dreams. Someone he knows already is dead.

Sandra’s boyfriend, who’s interested in old Swedish folklore, soon realizes Krister is haunted by a Mare – a female creature of the night or a woman possessed. He tries to guide Krister by helping him get rid of her, while Krister tries to regain his family and reestablish some sort of order in his life. But having a bad reputation in a small town makes it hard to regain the trust of someone you’ve let down so many times before.

Krister finds himself in a jungle of guilt and anxiety, superstition and nightmares, mental and physical illness, and has to find the best way out. Is the Mare real, or only in his mind?

Up next from Indonesian horror master Joko Anwar (Satan’s Slaves, Impetigore) is supernatural horror-comedy Ghost in the Cell, and a new image teases carnage-fueled laughs ahead.

Ghost in the Cell will screen at FrightFest on August 28.

Set within an Indonesian correctional facility, the film follows inmates whose survival instincts are tested when a mysterious new prisoner arrives accompanied by a supernatural entity that targets those with the darkest aura. As deaths mount, the incarcerated population discovers that collective action may be their only path to survival.

Joko Anwar writes and directs.

The fresh image previews some gnarly gore.

As for the film’s sense of humor, Anwar told Variety,Humor in the film doesn’t release tension, it sharpens it. Laughter should come with discomfort. If the audience laughs and then immediately questions why they did, the tone is working.

Abimana Aryasatya, Lukman Sardi, Bront Palarae, Aming, Rio Dewanto, Morgan Oey, and Tora Sudiro lead the ensemble cast.

Almanzo Konoralma, Arswendy Bening Swara, Danang Suryonegoro, Dewa Dayana, Endy Arfian, Faiz Vishal, Farrell Rafisqy, Haydar Salishz, Ho Yuhang, Ical Tanjung, Kiki Narendra, Magistus Miftah, Mike Lucock, Radja Nasution, Tony Merle, and Yoga Pratama round out the cast.

The comedic horror movie was acquired for North American release by Well Go USA earlier this year, with release details yet to be revealed.

We’re thrilled to bring Ghost in the Cell to North America, said Well Go USA CEO Doris Pfardrescher. As longtime fans of Joko Anwar, having previously released his film Gundala, we’ve seen firsthand how strongly his work resonates with audiences here. Ghost in the Cell is an absolute blast – it’s wildly entertaining and deliciously gory in all the right ways.

Ghost in the Cell made waves at the 2026 Berlin Film Festival before becoming a box office hit in Indonesian cinemas upon release on April 16, 2026.

Stay tuned for more as it arrives.
