Published

It was recently announced that Deon Taylor, the man behind Chain Letter, will direct and produce horror pic Akuma for his newly minted Hidden Empire Film Group label.

Screen Media Films has secured worldwide distribution rights and is planning a U.S. theatrical release next fall. We landed some early sales art at the ongoing AFM that’s a scream. Above you’ll find a promo trailer that features NO actual footage from movie.

The movie follows a young Japanese woman looking to put her life back together after a recent tragedy. As she pushes hard to overcome her problems she realizes that she’s fighting something very dark.

Taylor previously said Akuma (Japanese for demon) is a mix between Paranormal Activity and The Exorcist. (How original.) He will use a handheld style of shooting.

Taylor wrote the screenplay with Blayne Weaver and Joe Bockol.

The film will be shot in Los Angeles, Sacramento, Japan and San Francisco. Shooting’s scheduled to begin November 10, although no cast has been announced. Akira Tanaka, a young & attractive but emotionally damaged Japanese woman moves to the United States to escape a past marked by tragedy. She moves in with her sister Hana and her new husband Adam, hoping to leave her demons behind and start a new life. But as Akira’s behavior grows increasingly erratic and strange disturbances mark the night, Akira is forced to reveal her real reason for coming: to flee the malevolent spirit that has been tormenting her since childhood… and which appears to have followed her here.

Filming is underway on The Invisible Man director Leigh Whannell’s Wolf Man for Universal and Blumhouse, which will be howling its way into theaters on January 17, 2025.

Deadline reports that Matilda Firth (Disenchanted) is the latest actor to sign on, joining Christopher Abbott (Poor Things),  Julia Garner (The Royal Hotel), and Sam Jaeger.

The project will mark Whannell’s second monster movie and fourth directing collaboration with Blumhouse Productions (The Invisible Man, Upgrade, Insidious: Chapter 3).

Wolf Man stars Christopher Abbott as a man whose family is being terrorized by a lethal predator.

Writers include Whannell & Corbett Tuck as well as Lauren Schuker Blum & Rebecca Angelo.

Jason Blum is producing the film. Ryan Gosling, Ken Kao, Bea Sequeira, Mel Turner and Whannell are executive producers. Wolf Man is a Blumhouse and Motel Movies production.

In the wake of the failed Dark Universe, Leigh Whannell’s The Invisible Man has been the only real success story for the Universal Monsters brand, which has been struggling with recent box office flops including the comedic Renfield and period horror movie The Last Voyage of the Demeter. Giving him the keys to the castle once more seems like a wise idea, to say the least.
