Summit ‘Conjures’ Up the Dough For New Haunted House Thriller

Published

on

After the recent success of Lionsgate’s The Haunting in Connecticut, sequels are already in the works, while other companies are working hard on their own haunted tale. While MGM’s The Amityville Horror sequel appears to be on the rocks (as with the company), it seems only fit that someone take the reigns and bring us a new haunted house flick (as long as it’s better than Haunting in Connecticut). It was announced tonight that Summit Entertainment has just won a heated battle for the rights to Conjuring, that will be penned by the duo behind Warner Bros.’ forthcoming Whiteout adaptation. Read on for the skinny. After a brisk bidding battle, Summit Entertainment paid mid- against high-six figures for “Conjuring,” a thriller pitch from sibling scribes Chad and Carey Hayes (“Whiteout”), who will pen the script.

Deal comes with life rights to the Perron family, whose experiences in their Rhode Island home informs the film, and Ed and Lorraine Warren, experts in paranormal activities who investigated and battled the activities occurring in the Perron household and did the same in the cases that inspired “The Amityville Horror” and “The Haunting in Connecticut.”

Summit is keeping the specifics under wraps, but ghosts and demonic possession are at the center of the plot.

The bidding was aggressive, with New Line and Screen Gems also in the mix.

Peter Safran will produce via his Safran Co. banner along with Tony DeRosa-Grund, who will produce via the Evergreen Media banner.

Safran is prepping the indie thriller “Buried,” which is shooting this summer in Barcelona, as well as “Fathom,” a Fox adaptation of the graphic novel that has Megan Fox attached.

WME and Circle of Confusion repped the writers.

The third installment in Ti West’s trilogy, A24 will be releasing X and Pearl follow-up MaXXXine in theaters July 5, and the official poster has arrived from A24 this morning.

With her past catching up to her, Maxine attempts to make it big as a superstar in mid-80s Hollywood in the upcoming MaXXXine. Check out the brand new poster art below.

Mia Goth stars alongside Elizabeth Debicki, Moses Sumney, Michelle Monaghan, Bobby Cannavale, Halsey, Lily Collins, Giancarlo Esposito, Sophia Thatcher, and Kevin Bacon.

Here’s the official plot synopsis from A24 this week: “In 1980s Hollywood, adult film star and aspiring actress Maxine Minx finally gets her big break. But as a mysterious killer stalks the starlets of Hollywood, a trail of blood threatens to reveal her sinister past.”

Last we saw Maxine in Ti West’s X (2022), she was the sole survivor of a massacre carried out by elderly couple Howard and Pearl in the Summer of ’79. Goth of course pulled double duty as the villain Pearl in that movie, who got her own origin story in Pearl (2022). Pearl and Maxine are different characters, but they share the common goal of wanting to be stars.

Will Maxine finally make it in Hollywood? Or will the demons of her past become her ultimate downfall? With the Night Stalker roaming free, we expect MaXXXine to get wild this summer.
