Is Universal Creating An ‘Avengers’ Out Of Their Monsters?

Published

on

The last we heard (at least around these horror parts) from producers Robert Orci and Alex Kurtzman (who also wrote Transformers, Star Trek Into Darkness and Cowboys And Aliens) was that they were busy making their upcoming Van Helsing reboot as serious as possible.

Now, per IGN word comes down that they could be doing something very Marvel-like with the Universal monster universe. Orci tells the site, “Universal [has] this amazing library of their old monsters and these kinds of heroes, and the idea of trying to create a universe. ‘Van Helsing’, and we’re also producing ‘The Mummy’ for them. We’re kind of imagining updating these kinds of things. You don’t want to just make remakes when you’re doing a thing, unless it’s worthy of being a remake, but when you have an idea for something that can actually be made different and yet be true to what it was.

This is vague, but there’s some promising stuff in this implication. And since Orci is a fan of conspiracies, I don’t think he’d mind me hinting at one here with very little evidence. If a seamless Universal Monster universe existed, that would certainly be something. It would be nice to see a lot of these guys in a movie together for the first time since The Monster Squad. I’m not a huge fan of K&O’s output, but if this gets stitched together it could be cool either way.
