Review: ‘B.P.R.D. Hell on Earth’ #113

Published

on

“B.P.R.D. Hell on Earth: Lake of Fire” has had a major impact on the overall story line through the first 3 issues. Mignola and Arcudi continue to add different layers to the plot gearing up for the final issue. I’m very excited with the level of energy this series is producing right now, so much has been leading up to this point what with Abe, Liz and Zinco Corp. As the this arc comes to an end the course of the B.P.R.D. will be a little more clear as will the chosen paths of Fenix and Liz Sherman.

WRITTEN BY: Mike Mignola and John Arcudi
ART BY: Tyler Crook
PUBLISHER: Dark Horse Comics
PRICE: $3.50
RELEASE: November 20, 2013

The previous issue really opened up the story with Johaan’s realization of Zinco Corps involvement in the cataclysm and Liz Sherman’s flame manipulation abilities returning. On the other hand as we have Fenix, and one question keeps arising, whether or not she will avoid the Earth sundering event or confront it head on. This issue builds off all the three of these storylines. The importance of the mission to New York is now augmented, Liz Sherman can finally return to the front lines, and Fenix begins her adventure.

Unlike in the “Abe Sapien” and “Hellboy”, B.P.R.D. has several different story lines weaving around one another. Mignola and Arcudi have meticulously laid out this story in a fashion that it’s easy to understand while maintaining a constant level of excitement, hitting a crescendo at the end of this book. As the story jumps from character to character I never find myself in a lull; the perfect example is during a simple conversation as Johaan discusses his mission team, a basic scene of dialogue is given action as Agent Howards is brought up. Situations like this have been constant throughout “Lake of Fire” since there are so many characters to work with. But there is also a flaw. Like most things, if you’ve not read all of the past material, there are times that big events can lose you, especially in “Hell on Earth”.

The artistic tandem of Tyler Crook and Dave Stewart is as top notch as always. The pencils hold enough realism that when the situations get R-rated the illustrations capture gore and bloodletting excellently. Stewart is really able to display of colour as Liz puts her level of fire manipulation to the test creating a vividly colourful inferno, this series of panels is impressive on Crooks part as well as he is able to draw a detailed monster within the blaze.

A solid issue to warm up the readers for what will be an impactful conclusion. So much is at stake up to date it’s incredible to think about what 2014 will hold for the B.R.P.D.

Witchblade, the popular comic series that initially ran from 1995 to 2015 and launched a TV series, is getting resurrected in a new comic series from Top Cow and Image Comics. It’s set to unleash heavy metal, black magic and blood this summer.

Look for the new Witchblade series to launch on July 17, 2024.

In Witchblade #1, “New York City Police Detective Sara Pezzini’s life was forever fractured by her father’s murder. Cold, cunning, and hellbent on revenge, Sara now stalks a vicious criminal cabal beneath the city, where an ancient power collides and transforms her into something wild, magnificent, and beyond her darkest imaginings. How will Sara use this ancient power, or will she be consumed by it?”

The series is penned by NYT Best-Selling writer Marguerite Bennett (AnimosityBatwomanDC Bombshells) and visualized by artist Giuseppe Cafaro (Suicide SquadPower RangersRed Sonja). The creative duo is working with original co-creator Marc Silvestri, who is the CEO of Top Cow Productions Inc. and one of the founders of Image Comics. They are set to reintroduce the series to Witchblade’s enduring fans with “a reimagined origin with contemporary takes on familiar characters and new story arcs that will hook new readers and rekindle the energy and excitement that fueled the 90’s Image Revolution that shaped generations of top creators.”

Bennett said in a statement, “The ability to tell a ferocious story full of monsters, sexuality, vision, and history was irresistible.” She adds, “Our saga is sleek, vicious, ferocious, and has a lot to say about power in the 21st century and will be the first time that we are stopping the roller coaster to let more people on. I’ve loved Witchblade since I was a child, and there is truly no other heroine like Sara with such an iconic legacy and such a rich, brutal relationship to her own body.”

“The Witchblade universe is being modernized to reflect how Marguerite beautifully explores the extreme sides of Sara through memories, her personal thoughts, like desire and hunger, in her solitude and when she is possessed by the Witchblade. So, I had to visually intersect a noir True Detective-like world with a supernatural, horror world that is a fantastic mix between Berserk and Zodiac,” Cafaro stated.

Marc Silvestri notes, “This is brand new mythology around Sara, and I can’t wait for you to fall in love with her and all the twists and turns. Discover Witchblade reimagined this summer, and join us as we bring all the fun of the 90s to the modern age and see how exciting comics can be. I can’t wait for you to read this new series.”
