DAN FOGLER’S TOP 5 OF 2013

Moon Lake Volume 2 (Arcahia)
I’m a huge fan of “Moon Lake Volume 2” for obvious reasons. It’s got something for every fun loving horror fan!

Day Men (BOOM)
Also dug “Day Men” very much. A new twist on the already diverse vampire genre is hard to come by nowadays.

Touching Evil (Beardo Comics)
“Touching Evil” by Dan Daugherty is already TV series worthy in my opinion.

Hack/Slash (Image Comics)
“Hack/Slash” is always a crowd-pleaser. Cassie just gets meaner and her skirts get shorter.

The Walking Dead (Image Comics)
And of course I’m a sucker for “The Walking Dead”. I’m on the team of folks who think the TV show shoulda been black & white.

MICHAEL MORECI’S TOP 5 OF 2013

Revival (Image)
Not only my favorite horror comic, but probably the best comic of the year. We should all be studying Seeley and Norton’s execution of mundane Midwestern life mixed with intelligent ruminations on life, death, and aging. “Revival” has it all–character, great storytelling, and salient premise.

The Wake (DC/Vertigo)
This book is so unusual and unexpected, and that’s the reason I love it. I went into it thinking Alien/The Thing in the ocean. And, in some ways, it’s that (which, believe me, I’m more than okay with). But the book has slowly, and adroitly, morphed into something else. Snyder’s writing and Murphy’s art make for a perfect, inspired combo.

Hellboy in Hell (Dark Horse)
What else can be said about the Mignola-verse? No book should be this good. Every time I find myself wondering where the “Hellboy” story can go without jumping the shark, Mignola drops another piece of brilliance on my lap. I want this universe to last forever.

The Sixth Gun (Oni Press)
When will more people starting reading this book? Every single month, Bunn and Hurtt deliver a consistently amazing book. Great mythology, splendid characters–this is an amazing world to inhabit.

Fatale (Image)
This book keeps going strong as Brubaker and Phillips continue to work their magic. I love the expanding universe and the deep-seeded mythos.

BRANDON MONTCLARE’S TOP 5 OF 2013

Dial H (DC Comics)
Written by China Mieville & art by Alberto Ponticelli (and others). I was sad to see this series end, but it went out with a great big bang with “Dial E for Evil” during the the Villains Month event.

Saga (Image Comics)
“Saga” written by Brian K Vaughn & Fiona Staples, published by Image Comics is as good as everyone says–so there’s no reason not to be reading it.

Battling Boy (First Second)
It was definitely worth the wait to see Battling Boy. Amazing kinetic visuals and a brilliantly fun set up.

Pretty Deadly (Image)
Written by Kelly Sue DeConnick & art by Emma Rios is immersive and mesmerizing.

Hinterkind (DC/Vertigo)
Written by Ian Edginton & art by Francesco Trifogli. I’m putting this on my list because it was a total surprise. Vertigo gave all of it’s other new titles the heavier push, but I really like how this comic is developing–exciting stuff.

TOM HAMMOCK’S TOP 5 OF 2013

It’s been an awesome year for horror films and comics. What did we do to get so lucky? Nothing good I’d imagine. With “HLGGI”, I did grow up 15min from the town of Woodland, but nothing quite so interesting appears to happen there as fills its pages. I’m a sucker for great art, “DSL”, “Hellboy” and “Locke & Key” have in spades. And lastly where would one be without “Uncle Creepy keeping you on your toes?

Hellboy – The Midnight Circus (Dark Horse)

Locke & Key – Alpha & Omega (IDW)

Dead Space Liberation (Titan Books)

Halloween Legion Great Goblin Invasion (Dark Horse)

Creepy (Dark Horse)
